Call for Applications
International Young Women Knowledge and Leadership Institute

The African Women Millennium Initiative on Poverty and Human Rights (AWOMI) invites applications for the 2008 edition of its Young Women Knowledge and Leadership Institute (YOWLI) to be held for 4 weeks, June to July 2008 in Dakar, Senegal.

This program will bring together young activists for economic justice and economists for an intensive one-month gender-sensitive training on economics and social justice. Focus will be on human rights framework analysis for economic and social policy analysis, formulation, monitoring and accountability.

 

Strategic thinking towards women enhancing their economic and social rights for policy change may right to reproductive health and services, right to water, descent employment, adequate housing, political voice and representation, a life free from violence, information, adequate skills, food and good nutrition., communication for social change, and leadership. The training will build on participants’ capacities while increasing their confidence and skills needed to advance effective social mobilization in their countries and at international level.

 

This economic education and social mobilization program is aimed at equipping and empowering young people to advance the agenda on realizing economic and social rights. At the end of the training participants will produce a international campaign strategy on economic and social rights and tools for disseminating it and keeping the momentum in their respective countries.

 

This initiative is especially designed for young women leaders. However young men with proven track record of or interested in promoting gender equality are welcome to apply.

 

Selected candidates will be supported to attend the YOWLI 2008. Priority will be given to applicants affiliated to an organization. Eligibility Criteria:
• Applicants must be African or from the African Diaspora.
• Applicants must be 18-27 years old
• Must have high school level educational background
• Leadership skills, critical thinking, and creativity
• Language requirements: the program will be held in English and French with possibility of translation in Portuguese.
