HIV/AIDS is not only a medical issue but is a multifaceted issue that is inextricably linked to many of the social and development issues of our time. For programmes to be effective and adequate, problems relating to poverty and gender inequality must be addressed. Ensuring that policies that promote and protect the rights of women and PLHIV are in place will guarantee that these rights are not subordinate to other considerations. Furthermore, existing policies need to be translated into action and civil society plays a crucial role not only in their implementation but also in monitoring and evaluation processes.
This stream will look at the many issues that inform advocacy work on women and HIV and AIDS such as understanding and claiming women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights, the link between violence against women and HIV, advocacy for universal access to treatment, care and support and organizing campaigns on AIDS related- issues affecting women and girls.
